The teen years can be exhilarating... and can sometimes feel like a hot mess. It's not easy or necessary to navigate them without support. I work with teens ages 13+ who are struggling with anxiety, identity, relationships, and the overwhelming pressure to figure everything out.
My practice is a safe and brave space for all teens, including those who are trans, queer, BIPOC, neurodivergent, disabled, and anyone feeling out of place or unsure of how they fit in. If you fall into any of these groups, you will be in experienced hands. I've worked with teens my entire professional career (including before I became a therapist) and I intend to do so the rest of my life. I think teens are awesome, complicated people with legitimate problems and interesting minds. I'd be honored to be a trusted and responsible adult in your life.
Whether a teen is dealing with panic attacks, social anxiety, gender dysphoria, disordered eating, difficult relationships, or big emotional swings, therapy can help build insight, resilience, and an empowered sense of self. I support teens in learning about themselves, setting boundaries, acting in line with their values, and navigating relationships—from school and friendships to family and beyond.
When needed, and when it's acceptable to the teen, I also support parents and families in building similar skills and increasing communication and understanding. I am intentional and clear about the bounds of confidentiality, as this is the basis for trust in our relationship. Washington law protects teens' right to confidentiality around their mental health and a few other aspects of health. I will discuss this with teens and parents at the start of treatment and when necessary.
If it's called for, I will provide nonjudgmental, developmentally appropriate, evidence-based information about sexual health, relationship safety, and substance use, so teens can make informed choices, reduce potential harm, and prioritize safety. This information is inclusive of all types of people and relationships. This helps prepare teens to be resilient and astute adults.
Sessions are affirming, collaborative, and rooted in evidence-based practices and an anti-oppressive stance, tailored to meet teens where they are. For more details on my approach to therapy as a whole, including the specific modalities I use and my approach to social justice, please review my FAQ.
